Background

ISO 9001: 2000 was originally planned to cover the requirements of all service and manufacturing organisations. However by making the Standard more applicable to service type organisations, certain Industries or sectors considered that the Standard was not specific enough for particular aspects of their operation. Therefore variations of ISO 9001 have been agreed and published to cover the specific requirements of particular industries. Examples include:

• Medical Devices – ISO 13485
• Telecommunications – TL 9100
• Aerospace – AS EN 9100
• Automotive – TS16949
