EN 1090 Steel Structures

What is the EN 1090 Steel Structures CE Mark / UKCA Logo Standard?

EN 1090 for structural steel and aluminium is a requirement for products to be sold in Europe. Organisations involved in aspects of design and manufacture of steel or aluminium components must meet this Standard. Consequently, if your organisation deals with steel frames, metal roofing, structural engineering and associated components, and metal construction work, you must comply. In fact, for your business to sell these products, you must legally comply with the standard.

RECOGNITION OF THE CE AND UKCA MARKS

Until recently, two product marks applied to products used in metal construction. They were the CE Mark and the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) Mark. However, recognition of the CE Mark in Great Britain finishes at the end of 2022. From the 1st of January 2023, only the UKCA Mark will apply in Great Britain. Equally, the UKCA Mark will no longer meet requirements in the EU. So, your organisation should be clear about how you deal with business overseas. Using these marks carry legal responsibilities and requirements for this industry. Thus, adherence to the various standards require careful consideration and effective recognition of differences.

EN 1090-2 Steel Structures Standard applies to sale of steel and aluminium components and parts sold for use in construction work.

WHAT IS EN 1090?

The EN 1090 Standard is the harmonised Standard for steel and aluminium structures under the Construction Products Regulations. Compliance is required and assessed before the application of the CE Mark / UKCA Logo and legal compliance. Therefore, your organisation must meet the requirements of the Standard or cease trading in these construction products.

The majority of products currently covered under regulations for CE marking will be within the scope of UKCA marking. Consequently, changes to your existing UK operations will need to meet the UKCA Mark requirements. Additionally, companies distributing or importing products with the CE Mark, are also affected. As a result, every sector of the industry will change. So, regardless of your industry position, you will be responsible for meeting the regulations of the UKCA Mark, and for placing the Mark on products.

The EN 1090 execution of steel and aluminium structures series of Standards now consists of the following Parts 1 to 5 as follows:
1: Requirements for conformity assessment of structural components.
2: Technical requirements for steel structures.
3: Technical requirements for aluminium structures.
4: Technical requirements for cold-formed structural steel elements and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
5: Technical requirements for cold-formed structural aluminium elements and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
